Description of Agency/Activities: SVDP is a Catholic organization of lay persons which seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity, to help those in need. SVDP has operated in Milwaukee County since 1849, and offers a wide variety of services to the hungry, homeless, poor, sick, lonely, and suffering. One-on-one work through SVDP includes visiting people in their homes, hospitals, prisons, and institutions. Other SVDP programs include operating Thrift Stores and a Meal Program.
Student Role in Agency: The agency is in need of students who are willing to take initiative and spend time with some of the children who come for the meal program. Each volunteer team will be responsible for developing or identifying a themed project for their day, whether it is a craft, an activity, an educational game, etc. Ideally, the project would be paired with a book to promote literacy.
Kids can come to the library between 4:15-5:25pm. The volunteers can use this time to read to the kids and do the themed project planned for the day. At 5:25 take the kids down to the meal hall and escort them back to their parents. Volunteers can eat with the children if desired. Please take time before leaving to clean the library and to document the day’s events and journal about the day.
Details: Upon arrival, check in with meal program staff, Felipe (Southside), Walter (North), or Jean, find your time sheet in the file cabinet, punch in, and staff will escort you upstairs to unlock the room.
Commitment: Please commit to orientation and 2-3 hours once a week, good interpersonal skills with children, and the ability to handle conflict appropriately.
Students must complete SVDP volunteer information form and also sign SVDP volunteer guidelines. Students must also attend the Safeguarding All God's Children training. More information located at http://www.archmil.org/offices/safeguarding.htm.
