Description of Agency/Activities: Project Q has been serving LGBTQ youth aged 13-24 since 1999, providing them with a "safe space" in which they can participate in a variety of activities. Their mission is to create programs for youth by youth. Project Q offers three main services to LGBTQ youth. The first is drop-in activities, which focus on not only building a supportive community for the youth, but also providing them with a variety of programs designed to educate them on essential topics. The center offers a lounge area with computers, TV, DVD/ video players, and a library for the students that participate in drop-in activities. A second aspect of Project Q's programming for LGBTQ youth is support services, providing the youth with a variety of programming staff and peers with whom they can engage, receive valuable information, and find comfort. The third service is a skills building program which empowers the youth for the future. Project Q believes in the ability of youth to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become healthy educated adults.
Student Role in Agency: Service Learners will be working in collaboration with the staff as educators/mentors for LGBTQ youth during drop in hours. They must be ready to lead small groups, and/or help organize activities such as community service projects. Service Learners are expected to enter Project Q's safe space with an open mind and an understanding of the diverse issues of the LGBTQ youth. Activities vary from night to night: Typically: Mondays focus on life skills or reducing Alcohol and other drug abuse, Tuesdays focus on sexual health and healthy relationships, Wednesdays are arts based groups (Express Yourself Milwaukee), Thursdays Anti-Oppression, Fridays community building. Service Learners can work on additional projects with the support of Project Q staff including creating marketing/promotional materials and putting together a LGBT-friendly guide to Milwaukee.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If an interview is done with one of the clients it is imperative that the identity of the individual and any specific information be kept confidential. Remember that interviews are only permissible with prior approval from the site contact and the individual. Interviews are generally more meaningful when done closer to the end of the semester when stronger bonds are formed with the clients at your site.
Commitment: Following orientation, students are expected to attend one day a week for a 4.5 hour shift (5.5 on Fridays) during the aforementioned hours.
