Research Interests

My work focuses on classical German philosophy of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the thought of G.W.F. Hegel and Immanuel Kant. I am interested in this period as one in which philosophy began to break away from the natural sciences. For this reason, I think the period presents interesting resources for thinking about what philosophy itself is. In particular, how is philosophical understanding “conceptual” in a way that distinguishes it from other forms of inquiry? My interest in this question leads me to focus on the nature of concepts and conceptual analysis in Kant and Hegel. Ultimately, I hope to bring historical resources to bear on our contemporary understanding of philosophy. Additional research interests include Husserl’s phenomenology, philosophy of language, social ontology, and the history of metaphysics.
