Assistant Professor

Theology Department (Historical Theology)

Rev. Aaron Pidel, S.J. (Ph.D. University of Notre Dame, 2017), belongs to the U.S. Central-Southern Province of the Society of Jesus. A scholar of modern and contemporary historical theology, he has published mostly on twentieth-century German theology and the Jesuit theological tradition. Research interests include all periods of ecclesiology, the relationship between nature and grace, and theological hermeneutics. His first book, Church of the Ever Greater God: The Ecclesiology of Erich Przywara (UND Press, 2020) examines how Erich Przywara develops the notion of the “analogy of being” into an ecclesiology with Ignatian accents. With the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Fellow 2020-2021, Ruhr Universität Bochum), he has completed a book-length treatment of Joseph Ratzinger’s biblical hermeneutics (currently under review). Current research focuses on ecclesiology and Jesuit spirituality prior to the twentieth century.
