Description of Agency/Activities: La Causa charter school offers bilingual curriculum and instruction so students can be successful in learning both languages. For example, math and reading text books are available in both Spanish and English, allowing La Causa's students to develop both their English and Spanish language skills. La Causa's vision calls for strong parental support and community involvement in students' education.
Student Role in Agency: There are several opportunities for Service Learners with the La Causa CLC. Be sure to select the one that is the best fit for your course.
PLACEMENTS FOR STUDENT IN SPANISH COURSES:
- Tutoring in Spanish: Many children who attend the CLC have recently arrived to Milwaukee from Spanish-speaking countries, and need extra help with their homework, especially the work that needs to be done in English. The CLC has texts for reading and math in Spanish, but courses like science and social studies are in English. Make sure you are placed with a student who has limited fluency in English, so you will have the opportunity to speak as much Spanish as possible. Service Learners will likely speak English half the time, and then use Spanish the rest of the time. Students range in age from kindergarteners to 8th graders.
PLACEMENTS FOR ENGLISH SPEAKING STUDENTS:
- Tutoring: Service Learners will help the children who attend the CLC with their homework, assist in the computer lab, and assist with enrichment activities. Service Learners will develop relationships with the children and serve as positive role models. Students range in age from kindergartners to 8th graders.
Commitment/Requirements: Following a background check and orientation, Service Learners will serve one, two hour, shift per week for the duration of the semester.
- Students need to dress professionally - NO Flip Flops.
