BIG EAST future officially shared in New York

New era begins for Marquette Athletics in ‘new’ BIG EAST

Marquette President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., joined the presidents and athletic directors from the ten schools in the new BIG EAST Conference, including Larry Williams, vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics, in New York City to officially share the future of the BIG EAST conference on Wednesday, March 20.

"I believe we're in the best basketball conference in the country right now. If you look at the history of the schools, the original seven plus the new three, it's obviously an elite group," Father Pilarz said. “The new conference offers a tremendous opportunity for all 16 of Marquette’s athletic programs to compete against mission-driven and like-minded institutions.”

Williams, who joined Father Pilarz in New York, looks forward to starting play in the new conference next season, in 2013-14. “We look forward together to this new chapter for Marquette athletics, which will position our student athletes to attain the highest levels of success and personal development, both on and off the field,” added Williams.

"The earliest Jesuit educators believed in the character building value of a competitive spirit, and this move will position our student athletes to carry this tradition forward," added Father Pilarz.

Additional background and insight on the new BIG EAST from Father Pilarz and Williams is available in a Marquette Magazine online exclusive.
