Simply put, preceptors are vital to health care organizations. They are charged with the pivotal responsibility of ensuring newly licensed nurses’ competency to deliver safe, autonomous care.
Preceptors have tremendous power to guide the professional practice development of nurses, doing so through guided learning and role modeling. Because the role of preceptors is so imperative to the success of new nurses, Marquette University’s College of Nursing has created an online course — Effective Preceptoring: Tools for Practice — designed to educate preceptors on how to effectively work with new nurses.
