About the dental biomaterials master's program

Graduate students in dental biomaterials pursue the application of scientific principles to the study of dental biomaterials including relationships among compositions, physical properties, and clinical properties for dental biomaterial systems.

The MS program in dental biomaterials is offered to individuals who want to pursue advanced study in dental biomaterials. A major component of the program is conducting a research project culminating in the successful completion of a master’s thesis and defense. Training in methods, techniques and instrumentation used in dental biomaterials research are also extended to students.

Interdisciplinary Program

The dental biomaterials graduate program is an interdisciplinary program covering principles of materials science, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and dentistry. Satisfactory completion of the didactic and research components of the program results in a master’s degree through the Marquette University Graduate School.

In addition to the courses offered by the School of Dentistry, master’s candidates may be required by their program adviser to select courses offered through the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science or other departments. Elective courses in appropriate areas such as the dental graduate core curriculum (from the School of Dentistry) or materials science (from the College of Engineering) may also be selected according to the backgrounds and interests of the individual students.

Course Work Highlights

The curriculum is structured to provide a broad overview of the use of materials science in dentistry.

Courses cover topics such as:

  • Metallurgy
  • Ceramics
  • Polymers
  • Mechanical behavior
  • Cements
  • Experimental techniques as they apply to dental biomaterials

Opportunities in teaching dental biomaterials and training in methods, techniques and instrumentation used in dental biomaterials research are also extended to students.

Coursework

A student in the dental biomaterials program must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work, consisting of a curriculum of graduate dental biomaterials courses (23 credits), statistics (3)  and thesis work (6). More course work information can be found on the Graduate School Bulletin

Application Deadline

Applicants to dental biomaterials are encouraged to have their complete application submitted by February 1 to be considered for the fall entry class. Spring semester entry is possible every other year (odd years). The program director notifies admitted students regarding the starting date for their program.

Application Requirements

Read all application instructions prior to beginning an application.

  1.  completed Marquette University application form and application fee online. Applicants must apply through Marquette, or they are not considered for admission. In addition, applicants may also apply through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) operated by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), but it is not required. The endodontics and orthodontics programs do not accept PASS.
  2. Transcripts:
    • If coursework was completed within the United States, submit copies of all current and previous college/universities except Marquette1
    • If coursework was completed outside of the United States, a transcript evaluation is required. A copy of a course-by-course evaluation is approved for the application process.2
    • Official transcripts from all current and previous colleges/universities except Marquette. International applicants must have course grades converted to numerical values of 4.000, 3.000, 2.000, and 1.000 or to corresponding letter grades of A, B, C, and D, respectively. Where such a conversion is not possible, an explanation of the grading system used in the foreign dental school and undergraduate institution should accompany the official English translation of the grade transcripts.
    • Undergraduate and dental school grade-point averages, and class rank in dental school. If class rank is not listed on the official transcript, a dean's letter may be submitted to gradadmit@marquette.edu or as an additional reference through the online application.
  3. Three letters of recommendation reflecting the applicant’s clinical and academic abilities.
  4. Scores from the National Board Dental Examinations, Part I and Part II OR the Integrated National Board Dental Examination. Not required from dental biomaterials applicants or from graduates of non-U.S./non-Canadian dental schools.
  5.  GRE scores strongly recommended (General Test only).
  6. A curriculum vitae and a personal statement.
  7. (For international applicants only) a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.

Teaching assistantships in the Dental Biomaterials program are not typically available. Research assistantships are occasionally available but rely on current funding status of program faculty. Private scholarships may be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible to apply for need-based federal aid (loans) to help fund their educational expenses.
