As you are aware, the university has changed its timekeeping practices for non-exempt employees, effective September 17. The change in timekeeping has generated some questions about how non-exempt employees should log time spent attending various programs and events, including those offered through the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality. I am writing to clarify the timekeeping policy as it relates to university events and professional development opportunities, such as GROW programming.
University-Wide Events and Mission and Ministry Programs
Permission to attend a university event is dependent upon the approval of your supervisor and the ability of the department to function satisfactorily in the employee’s absence. Approved time for attendance at certain events, including the President’s Address, the Christmas celebration, anniversary luncheons and programs sponsored by Mission and Ministry and the Faber Center is considered regular time and will be paid as regular time worked. In cases where events or programs overlap the meal period, your standard meal period should be taken as usual, and the remainder of the time will be considered regular time worked. Paid and non-paid time for attendance at all other university events is determined at the discretion of your supervisor.
The Office of Mission and Ministry and the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality are supported by the university to serve the spiritual needs of employees and advance mission understanding and leadership in all areas of the institution. Because mission competency is such an essential skill for all Marquette employees, programs sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality will be paid as regular time worked, unless the event overlaps the meal period, in which case your standard meal period should be taken as usual, and the remainder of the time will be considered regular time worked. The university also supports Retreat Leave, which provides employees the opportunity to use up to two full days of paid leave in order to participate in a spiritual retreat.
Professional Development/GROW with Marquette Programs
The university recognizes the importance of encouraging and supporting employee professional development activities. When participation in a professional development activity requires attendance during your normal work schedule and/or the payment of fees or other expenses, prior approval by your supervisor is required. If the approved professional development activity is job-related or contributes to an employee’s professional development plan, the activity time will be considered regular time and paid as regular time worked. You should still take your standard meal period on work days in which development activities are attended.
