Marquette is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This status exempts the university from federal and state income tax on activities closely related to our exempt purpose as an educational institution, but it is not a blanket exemption from all types of tax.

The Office of Tax and Compliance strives to ensure that Marquette follows all prevailing tax laws applicable to the university. Major areas of focus include payroll withholding taxes, sales tax, independent contractor classification and reporting, non-resident alien tax reporting, raffle prize reporting, unrelated business income tax, post-issue bond compliance, foreign accounts reporting, trust tax returns, and preparation of the annual information and unrelated business tax returns for the university.
